Lenten Challenge #1 -Fasting
Fasting is a voluntary spiritual discipline that helps us draw closer to
God.
One day this week, skip breakfast, lunch and snacks. Spend some of
that time reading scripture and praying. What comes to mind? If you
have time, jot down a few of your thoughts. Here are a few Bible
verses on fasting to get you thinking.
Matthew 6:16-18
Galatians 5:16
Matthew 4:1-4
Ezra 8:21-23
Isaiah 58:1-9
Lenten Challenge #2 - Solitude
Choose one hour this week where you can:
- Be alone
- Be silent
- Have no distractions (including reading) so that you can listen to
and focus on God. Think, pray, jot down your thoughts if you
like. Go for a walk. Be in creation. Sit in a quiet room. Whatever
works for you.
Jesus made solitude an essential part of His life on this earth.
Here are some Bible verses about how Jesus used solitude:
Matthew 4:1,
Matthew 14:23
Mark 1:35,
and Luke 4:42
Lent Experience Challenge #3 -Repentance
- Set aside a 30-minute block of time to ask God to
shine is light into your life to see things as they
really are. - Use scripture to help you take inventory: Exodus
20: 1-17, Galatians 5:16-26, 1 Corinthians:14 - Confess and repent. Are you willing to think and
act differently? - Repentance is a great gift. God loves you!
Lent Experience Challenge #4 -Almsgiving
- Keep your eyes open. Simply ask God, “Who do
you want me to help and where do you want me to
go? Then go throughout your day looking for the
answer. You’ll likely be surprised at how much
more you notice all around you. - Explore donating to your local church or to an
organization that is meeting the needs of the
people. - Do it…this week…even if you do it imperfectly.
Lent Experience Challenge #5 - Forgiveness
If you’ve wronged someone and have never
apologized and attempted to restore the relationship,
this is your week!
They may forgive you, they may not. You may become
friends again, you may not.
Their response is not the point. The point is that we,
as Christ followers, are obedient to God.
Lent Experience Challenge #6 - Bible Reading
Your challenge this week is to spend time in the Bible.
Here is a Holy Week reading schedule from the Gospel
of Luke:
Monday- Luke 19:28-48
Tuesday- Luke 20
Wednesday- Luke 21
